Duration of ownership: 4 Months
Strengths: It's free and can do a lot of smaller editing tasks.
Weaknesses: It's not that intuitive, at least for me. User interface is just so so.
Overall Evaluation: As a free software, it's very good and highly recommended.

Strengths: great program, very comprehensive. not much it can't view.
Weaknesses: it's only a small part of the picture.
Overall Evaluation: Not a bad program, but I like XNVIEW better. kinda like a mix of this and ACDSee, with photoshop plugin support and great photo tools!

Strengths: Ease of use and flexibility. You don't need an advance graphics degree to view and make basic modifications to your images.
Weaknesses: None for me. However, I use XNView for browsing folders and generating HTML files of groups of images.
Overall Evaluation: Excellent and free of charge - great for the non-professional.

Strengths: Strengths? It's a cinch to resize and - while it's reliable - it can perform simple tasks that other - more sophisticated photo editing programs just can't do. I've used it for years and - as an artist - it's become something I can't do without! It's way simple to use.
Weaknesses: Well - it's not sophisticated as are programs like Photoshop - but such programs can be snarky in my estimation (I also have Elements).
Overall Evaluation: You can't go wrong - and look at the price. I call it 'Irfan' and it's definitely user friendly.

Strengths: FAST photo edits, viewing, batch processing. Very feature rich.
Weaknesses: It's not Photoshop (which is slow, but better for very serious picture editing). Also, some more powerful features do require thought to use. Redeye feature doesn't work well.
Overall Evaluation: Irfanview is underappreciated, because it started as just a file viewer. As an amateur photographer, I couldn't live without this program. When I take lots of pics somewhere, my main concerns are: auto-rotate sideways ones, view them, delete bad ones, crop, exposure etc. adjust, fine rotation when I didn't shoot straight, then rename using date & time so they're auto-sorted in with other camera pics of the event. Doing that with most programs would take for FOREVER. Irfanview even has a shortcut to load the pic. into Photoshop for me when I'm willing to take the time to do stuff like eliminate skin blemishes or redeye fixes. Learn a few keyboard shortcuts, and Irfanview lets you quickly make most of the changes you want for the whole series of pics. Just hit to delete bad ones. G to adjust contrast, saturation, brightness with quick slider bars. S to sharpen. Batch processing takes a bit to figure out, because it's so powerful. If you haven't been cropping your pics, you'll be amazed at how much better they look when you cut out the distracting elements.

Strengths: The screensaver process is easy. The desktop wallpaper process is a snap. The keystrokes are easy to learn and remember. The program has never gone bad on me.
Weaknesses: The cropping is straight lines only; it would be nice to have shapes available. I kinda wish there was a correction tool for bad complexions, etc.
Overall Evaluation: I expect to continue using this wonderful little program for many years to come. I've set my preferences so that all pix open in Irfan. This is a great starting program for people new to photo editing, but it's still a wonderful tool for the more experienced

Strengths: Open fasts yet provides basic capabilities. Price was right... free... Even if you make a donation, it is still inexpensive.
Weaknesses: Locations of features on pull down menus not where expected.
Overall Evaluation: The time required for an application to open is very important to me. Although I own a license for Microsoft's Digital Image Pro10, I only open it when I need its advanced features. I had been using an old version of Microsoft Photo Editor for basic editing, but Irfanview provides a key feature lacking in Photo Ed. 3.0, the ability to insert text. It adds that capability seemingly without adding a heavy load on computing resources. I've not yet installed any of the "plug ins," so I can't comment on the additional capabilities they provide. Supposedly they allow you to open most any image files including some generated by CAD programs.

Strengths: Simple interface, easy to use. Can handle just about any graphics format out there. It's free!
Weaknesses: None I can think of.
Overall Evaluation: This is the MUST HAVE graphics application. No matter what programs you're using, sooner or later, you come across a format that you have trouble viewing. Irfanview can open just about any graphics file. It's simple and powerful. The best free image viewer ever!
