Alternate Universe of Macworld News

macworld, apple, parodyAre you suffering from withdrawal after Apple's less-than-exciting keynote address at the MacWorld Expo yesterday? Apple VP Phil Schiller may not have introduced a shiny new Mac Mini or iMac, but that hasn't stopped others from dreaming up new possibilities for Mac addicts.

From the Onion News Network we have the MacBook Wheel, an innovative laptop that does away with the keyboard. "Everything is just a few hundred clicks away," said Brian Gilman, Apple's faux Senior Product Innovator. According to ONN, the MacBook Wheel is big on energy savings with a 20-minute lifespan from the hummingbird battery and the screen goes blank after 4 seconds to save even more power. ONN quoted Apple CEO Steve Jobs as saying that people who use keyboards are "standing in the way of human progress." See the video below for the full story.

LG Adds to Connected Blu-ray Player Lineup

LG Electronics forges ahead with its initiative to meld streaming content with Blu-ray playback. At the Consumer Electronics Show today, the company introduced two Blu-ray players that offer access to on-demand streaming content from Netflix, CinemaNow, and YouTube. LG also took the wraps off three new Blu-ray Disc Home Theater Systems.

The new players are the LG BD370 and LG BD390 Network Blu-ray Disc Players, which are follow-ups to the BD300 released last fall. That player let you access streaming content from Netflix; the new players all feature LG's "NetCast Entertainment Access" for on-demand streaming content from Netflix, CinemaNow, and YouTube. Millions of YouTube videos can be accessed via the players and the nterface makes it easy to search, preview, and watch YouTube videos.

BlackBerry 8900 Curve Debuts on T-Mobile: Slimmest Full-QWERTY

The thinnest and smallest full-QWERTY BlackBerry, the BlackBerry Curve 8900 is the latest addition to RIM's popular family of smart phones. Available from T-Mobile, the Curve 8900 has a more powerful processor and the 2.4-inch 65K display has the highest resolution of any full-QWERTY BlackBerry available. Unfortunately, the Curve 8900 has no 3G support.

Curves aren't known for having the best photo quality, so a 3.2-megapixel camera with 5x digital zoom and flash is a welcomed addition. Additionally, the 8900 has expandable memory for up to 16GB - a necessary feature for media-rich smart phones.

Refurbished iPhones Land at Best Buy

Best Buy seems to have a good deal going with Apple, as it was the first retailer outside of Apple's own stores to carry iPhones, and now will be the first again, by selling "refreshed" or, more accurately, refurbished 3G iPhones.

The refurbished iPhones will be devices that were returned within 30 days by the original owner and are priced $50 less than a shiny new model. So an 8GB model would sell for $149 while the 16GB model sells for $249. The refurbished iPhones are now available at 350 Best Buy locations that have a Best Buy Mobile store.

Coming to a Wall Near You: GreenTV

At a time when power savings is a hot topic, LG has begun shipping the first televisions that qualify for the LCD TV Association's GreenTV logo. The logo program was designed to encourage TV makers to reduce power consumption, and to help consumers make an informed choice on what kind of TV they're going to buy.

Integral to program is that TV makers implement the use of ambient light sensors, which automatically lower the TV's brightness in a dark room by decreasing power to the backlight. This results in a power savings of 30 to 60 percent.

Motorola Recycled Phones Should've Remained Plastic Bottles

Would you buy a crap phone just because it's “green”? When a company has 350 employees dedicated to implementing a brand-spanking-new mobile OS into its devices, one doesn't really expect to see a phone made out of recycled plastic bottles. But defying any rational judgment, Motorola decided to become even more boring with its 2009 phone lineup.

As reported yesterday, Motorola went all “green” with two new mobile phones due to be released sometime this year, namely the MOTO W233 (pictured above - left) and the MOTOSURF A3100 (right). Seems like innovation is drying up over at Motorola, as there couldn't be anything more standard to these phones, that is of course, if you judge the phones and not the company's carbon offsetting policy.
